*IMPLEMENTATION AND APPLICATION OF RESEARCH

This research is sponsored by the Nevada DOT for the duration of 2000-2005. The overall objective of this study is to move the results of research studies conducted by the Nevada Department of Transportation throughout the past ten years into the stages of implementation and application. The study will follow-up on the performance of field projects, use the field performance data to modify materials specifications, mixture design methods, and structural design methods. The study will also update pavement design, analysis, and management software to incorporate recent advancements in materials and design procedures.

Task 1.0: Performance of Field Projects

This task covers all research projects that dealt with the application and evaluation of new materials and new design procedures. The objective of this task is to monitor and analyze the performance of the various projects that were conducted using the new design procedures and/or new materials specifications. These projects may be either special test sections which were placed as part of a larger project or an entire construction project. The intent of the performance monitoring and analysis would be to validate or modify if necessary the recommendations of the research activities pertaining to each project or group of projects. Once the research recommendations are validated and/or modified, they will be incorporated in the appropriate design and specifications procedures.

Task 2.0: Upgrade and Modification of Software and Design Procedures

NDOT has been using the mechanistic-empirical overlay design procedure for the past 8 years. This software program was developed in the early 1990's based on DOS operations. Throughout the past several years, NDOT personnel have identified several areas of the software that require upgrading. One of the major areas is to convert this software into a Windows based operation. This task will upgrade the current Overlay Design software to make operational in a Windows based environment and to incorporate the features identified by NDOT personnel.

Task 3.0 Briefing Documents

The objective of this task is to prepare documents summarizing the accomplishment and the progress of each task on every project. These documents will be called "Briefing Documents" since they will be used to brief NDOT personnel on the progress of the work and to present draft versions of the test methods, specifications, and upgrade software that will recommended as a result of this work. Briefing documents will prepared for each of the research projects identified in Tasks 1.0 and 2.0. Briefing meetings will be held at NDOT headquarters every six month to present and discuss the briefing documents. This approach will optimize cooperation between NDOT and the research team and will significantly strengthen the final product. Biannual briefing meetings will be held at other locations throughout the state (i.e. Las Vegas, Reno, Elko, etc...) in order to inform the state districts personnel about the anticipated results.

Task 4.0 Guide Design Manuals and Specifications

The objective of this test is to develop design manuals and specifications based on the recommendations of the performance documentation and analysis activities conducted under Tasks 1.0 and 2.0. Some of the findings will be used to develop design manuals while others will be used to modify specifications. For example the cold in place recycling (CIR) research will result in the development of a mix design manual for CIR mixtures while the Superpave binder research will result in new specifications for asphalt binders. The research team will use the information generated from performance monitoring and analysis to develop design manuals and specifications that can be readily implemented by NDOT personnel.
